What can the Basic Skills in the Workplace project offer me and my company?

South Birmingham College are offering Basic Skills training free for the duration of a pilot study A team of fully qualified Basic Skills tutors is available to run classes or workshops on your premises. These classes can lead to nationally recognised qualifications in Communications, Number Application and Information Technology.Typically, classes or workshops are held at shift charge over times, with staff contributing one hour of their time and being released from their duties for another hour.

What are Basic Skills?

Basic Skills are the general skills which individuals need to be effective members of a flexible, adaptable and competitive workforce. This involves the ability to read, write and speak in English and use mathematics at a level necessary to function and progress at work and in society in general.

*Recent government sponsored research has revealed that 1 in 6 of the population over the age of 16 has serious problems with reading, writing, understanding or speaking English or with basic maths. 7 million adults in England cannot find the page reference for plumbers given a copy of the Yellow Pages index.
1 in 3 adults in this country cannot calculate the area of a room that is 21 x 14 feet, even with the aid of a calculator!

Over half of these people were either in work or were looking for work. Some of these people could be working for you!

Poor Basic Skills: Poor Business

You may have encountered the following difficulties within your firm:

* Problems with handling customers      * Inaccurate records       * Reluctance amongst staff to transfer jobs *Failure to comply with H & S and other legislation         *High wastage levels           *Inappropriate responses to written instructions       *Inexplicable failure to take up promotion opportunities     *Supervisor's time lost in misunderstanding, explanations and correcting errors

Any or all of these problems may derive from low levels of Basic Skills amongst the workforce. For many employees, long shifts, family commitments and lack of confidence in their own ability mean that these needs will most realistically be met by workplace training.

Improve Basic Skills: Become a Learning Business

Your shop floor staff are closest to the job, know it best and know what it needs best. By enhancing their Basic Skills, you will help them to learn to use this knowledge more effectively.

Greater operational efficiency

Increased productivity

Better record keeping

Increased ability to work unsupervised

Improved quality control

Improved customer relations

Faster implementation of new systems and new machinery

Better team work

Basic Skills training is an effective and low cost investment in the future of your firm. It can help you and your company achieve investors in people and other quality awards.
